Find what you love, and go all out
Steve Jobs]
I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz andI started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We workedhard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us ina garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. Wehad just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a yearearlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can youget fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew wehired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had afalling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. Soat 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus ofmy entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didnt know what to do for afew months. I felt that I had let the previousgeneration of entrepreneurs down - thatI had dropped the baton as it was beingpassed to me. I met with David Packardand Bob Noyce and tried to apologize forscrewing up so badly. I was a very publicfailure, and I even thought about runningaway from the valley. But something slowlybegan to dawn on me - I still loved whatI did. The turn of events at Apple had notchanged that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided tostart over.
I didnt see it then, but it turned out thatgetting fired from Apple was the best thingthat could have ever happened to me. Theheaviness of being successful was replaced bythe lightness of being a beginner again, lesssure about everything. It freed me to enter oneof the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started acompany named NeXT, another companynamed Pixar, and fell in love with anamazing woman who would becomemy wife. Pixar went on to create theworlds first computer animated featurefilm, Toy Story, and is now the mostsuccessful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Applebought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and thetechnology we developed at NeXT is at theheart of Apples current renaissance. AndLaurene and I have a wonderful familytogether.
Im pretty sure none of this would havehappened if I hadnt been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guessthe patient needed it. Sometimes life hitsyou in the head with a brick. Dont losefaith. Im convinced that the only thingthat kept me going was that I loved whatI did. Youve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as itis for your lovers. Your work is going tofill a large part of your life, and the onlyway to be truly satisfied is to do what youbelieve is great work. And the only wayto do great work is to love what you do. If you havent found it yet, keep looking. Dont settle. As with all matters of theheart, youll know when you find it. And,like any great relationship, it just getsbetter and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Dontsettle.
You can have it all. Just not all at once

So, today, I just want to share afew lessons-meaning three-that Ivelearned in my journey so far.
The three lessons that have hadthe greatest impact on my life have todo with feelings, with failure and withfinding happiness.
A year after I left college, I was giventhe opportunity to co-anchor the 6 oclocknews in Baltimore.
And sometimes I wouldnt readthe copy-because I wanted to bespontaneous-and Id come across a list ofwords I didnt know and Id mispronounce. And one day I was reading copy and Icalled Canada “ca nada”. And I decided, thisBarbara things not going too well. I shouldtry being myself.
And after eight months, I lost thatjob. But since they didnt want to payout the contract, they put me ona talk show in Baltimore. Andthe moment I sat down on thatshow, the moment I did, I feltlike Id come home. I realizedthat TV could be more than justa playground, but a platform forservice, for helping other peoplelift their lives. And the momentI sat down, doing that talk show,it felt like breathing. It felt right. And thats where everything thatfollowed for me began.
And I got that lesson. Whenyoure doing the work youremeant to do, it feels right andevery day is a bonus, regardless ofwhat youre getting paid.
