阿尔弗莱德·丁尼生Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892)，英国维多利亚时代最走红的大诗人。丁尼生继承了浪漫派诗人华兹华斯、拜伦和济慈的传统，同时受到古希腊、罗马文学的影响。他早期的诗作清新、生动，富于想象力，著名诗篇《尤利西斯》描述了年老的尤利西斯追求新境界永不止息的精神。1833年他的挚友早逝，他经过17年的构思，写成组诗《悼念》表示纪念。这部组诗被认为是英国文学中最优秀的哀歌之一，给作者带来极大的声誉。维多利亚女王因而与他结交，并封他为“宫廷桂冠诗人”。

A hand display with many a little art；
An eye that glances on her neighbour’s dress；
A foot too often shown for my regard；

诗人曾一度痴迷于一位贵族美貌少女，但很快，一时的迷恋就变成了深深的失望和恼怒。这次恋爱的失意加深了他对女性魅力的认识。本诗讽刺的就是金玉其外的浅薄女子。女人如果只会使小性子，只会搔首弄姿，就算貌若天仙也不能得到男性持久的爱。只有内涵丰富，心灵美才能使女性温柔生动，更加迷人，才能让人付出真心。

约述亚·塞尔维斯特Joshua Sylvester（1562-1618），英国著名诗人兼文学翻译家，以翻译法国诗人都·巴达斯（Du Bartas）的诗歌著称。这是诗人仅存下来的一首十四行诗作，选自《诗薮》（The Poetical Rhasodie）。
我的卑微，就像那低洼的草原
而你，我的爱人，如蓝天般高贵
我，你卑微的情人，
