Lesson 255

How come...? 为什么……?

“How come”是固定搭配,和“why”一样可以引导一个问句,但是提问者的感情不同,“How come”带有对某事感到奇怪的感觉。以“How come”开头的问句使用陈述句语序,翻译为“怎么回事……”、“为什么……”。

征服句型

How come you are so confident?

你为什么这么自信?

How come you show yourself in public actively?

你为什么这么积极地在公众场合表现你自己?

How come you forgot that today is your mother’s birthday?

你怎么会忘记今天是你母亲的生日?

How come you have never told me that you have such a cute daughter?

Tips

以“How come”开头的问句还可以表示成“how come it that...”、“how is it that...”。例如:How come it that you are absent from the meeting? 你为什么缺席会议?

I’m curious to (do) / about... 我对(做)……很好奇“curious”是好奇的意思,所以该句型的意思即“对……感到很好奇”。

征服句型

I’m curious about playing mahjong.

我对打麻将很好奇。

I’m curious about a person who is withdrawn and introverted.

我对性格孤僻内向的人很好奇。

Children are curious about something that relates adults.

Tips

I’ve had it up to here with... 我真受不了……“I‘ve had it up to here with...”后接名词或动名词。

征服句型

I’ve had it up to here with the dirty room you made.

I’ve had it up to here with that noisy baby.

It is (very) useful to... ……很有用

该句型原型为”It is+形容词+to do sth.”,表示“……是……的”意思。

征服句型

It’s useful to your parents to have a walk after dinner every day.

每天饭后散步对你的父母有益。

It’s useful to encourage all students in our class by the way of praise.

表扬对激励我们班所有的学生都有帮助。

It’s useful to improve your math marks by doing more exercises.

类似的用法还有“It is possible to...”、“It is difficult to...”等。

Lesson 259

...on the ground that... 因为……

“on the ground that...”在此处不是“在地上”的意思,是“因为……”、“以……为理由”的意思。

征服句型

Your son was sent to teacher’s room on the ground that he was late for class.

你的儿子被送到老师办公室了,因为他上课迟到。

She can’t keep up with her classmates on the ground that she plays all the time.

她不能跟上同学们,因为她贪玩。

He doesn’t like his baby on the ground that it is girl.

他不喜欢他的宝宝,因为他的宝宝是女孩。

The bald man retired on the ground of his age.

那个秃顶的男人因为年龄而退休。

Lucy married Tom on the ground of his money.

Tips

“on the ground that...”一般用于句中,表示相同意思的“because”或者“because of”则在句中或句首使用都可以。

In as much as... 既然……

句型“In as much as”的标准形式是“In as much as+从句,+主句”,翻译为“既然……”。

征服句型

In as much as it is raining, we will cancel the journey.

既然下雨了,我们将取消行程。

In as much as we have gone so far, we can’t go back.

既然我们已经走了那么远了,我们不可以

回去。

In as much as you took the words out of my mouth, I shall say nothing.

既然你说了我想说的话,我就不说了。

In as much as the whole world knows the relationship between us, I won’t escape.

Tips

类似的用法还有“since...”、“as...”、“now that...”,它们都表示“既然……”的意思。

because of 出于……原因

词组“because of”构成的句型是“主语+谓语+ because of+名词”,“because of”引导原因状语,意思是“由于/出于……的原因”。原因状语置于句首起强调作用。

征服句型

He had a rest because of a cold.

他因为感冒休息了。

Because of lacking of workers, you must double your working hours.

因为人数不够,所以你们的工作时间必须加倍。

Tom will not take part in the summer camp because of his illness.

汤姆因为生病而不能参加夏令营。

Because of the recession, Japan reduces the agriculture product trade.

因为经济萧条,日本减少了农产品贸易。

Tips

“because of ”可以替换成“out of、account of、on the score of ”等,这四种形式都不可以引导原因从句,只能引导原因状语。例如:Mary can’t attend this meeting on the score of illness. 玛丽因病不能出席这个会议。

Lesson 262

thanks to 由于/因为

在此句型中,“thanks to”引导原因状语,可以用“owing to、due to”来代替。“Thanks to”是由“thank”派生出来的,所以含有“幸亏”、“由于”的意思。“due”的原意是“应得的”,在这里用于因果关系,多指一种必然的现象,翻译为“由于”、“因为”。

征服句型

Thanks to his help, I can finish the task on time.

因为他的帮助,我能准时完成任务。

He can easily win the game thanks to his good preparation.

由于他的充分准备他可以轻松地拿下比赛。

This traffic jam was due to traffic violation of a red car.

这起交通堵塞是由于一辆违章的红色轿车引起的。

Her bad feeling was owing to her boyfriend who broke the appointment with her.

她心情不好是由于她男朋友爽约的缘故。

Tips

“owing to”也有“幸亏”、“由于”的意思。“thanks to、owing to”本来是副词短语,“due to”本来是形容词短语,在本句型中这三个短语都被用作复合介词。例如:Owing to their corporate effort, the project has been fulfilled on time. 由于他们共同的努力,这项工程按时完成了。

Lesson 263

What by... and... 部分由于……部分由于……标准形式是“What by...and(what by)...,+主句”,本句型表示分别有两个部分原因的说法。“What by”用来强调手段和方式,翻译为“部分由于……部分由于……”、“一方面因为……一方面因为……”。

What by understanding and what by cramming, he got a satisfactory result finally.

一方面理解一方面强记,他最后取得了令人满意的成绩。

What by the bad weather and what by his illness, Tom could not play with us.

一方面因为半因天气不好一方面因为他生病了,汤姆不能和我们一起玩。

Tips

本句型中的“what by”可以换成“What with”、“What for”、“What through”,其他部分均不变。例如:What for money and what for time, I could not have a journey with you. 一方面因为没钱一方面因为没时间,我不能和你一起旅游。

Lesson 264

...be late for... 迟到了……

句型“...be late for...”引导原因从句,句中的“be”是系动词,“late”是形容词,翻译为“因……迟到”、“做……迟到”、“迟到……”。

征服句型

Never be late for an appointment with lady.

永远不要与女士约会迟到。

From the childhood, he has not been late for school.

从小时候起,他上学就从不迟到。

It’s unimportant for boss to be late for a meeting.

对老板来说开会迟到不是什么重要的事。
