Conversation 1
Frank:How to handle a napkin at western dinner?
Peter:Generally, when you are seated, put your napkin on your lap. But at a formal dinner, you should wait until the hostess picks up her napkin, then pick yours up and lay it on your lap.Sometimes a roll of bread is wrapped in it;if so,take it out and put it on your side plate.
Frank:How do I know when to start eating as a guest at dinner?
Peter:Dinner usually begins with soup. The host or hostess will ask guests to begin with the soup after they have been served.
Frank:What about the table setting?
Peter:Well,a plate will be put in the middle of your place. Forks are on your left side and nives are on your right side.Dessert cutlery is at the twelve o'clock of your plate, and bread cutlery at eleven o'clock.
Frank:How about the glasses?
Peter:Water glass, red wine glass and white wine glass are palced at one clock.
Frank:OK. I got it.Thank you.
Peter:You're welcome.

Steven:Why?
Tom:I'm not familiar with the table manners.
Steven:Well, just follow your hostess and remember not to make any noise, especially with soup, coffee, water and other drinks. They usually use the knife and spoon in your right hand, and the fork in your left hand.

If you have English and American friends, you will notice a few differences in their customs of eating. For the main or meat course, the English keep the fork in the left hand, point curved downward, and bring the food to the mouth either by sticking the points onto it or in the case of soft vegetables,by placing it firmly on the fork in this position with the knife.Americans carve the meat in the same position, then lay down the knife and taking the fork in the right hand with the point turned up,push it under a small piece of food without the help of the knife and bring it to the mouth right-side-up.
On formal dining occasions,it is acceptable to take some butter from the butter dish with your bread knife and put it on your side plate. Then butter pieces of the roll using this butter. This prevents the butter in the dish getting full of bread crumbs as it is passed around.Knives should be used to butter bread rolls but not to cut them-tear off a mouthful at a time with your hands.
