约翰·霍华德·佩恩John Howard Payne（1791-1852），演员、作家。他的职业生涯不同寻常。他写第一个剧本时，年仅15岁，后到协和学院学习一年，18岁第一次登台演出。他在欧洲演出十分成功，但他作为一个剧作家的名声更大。他写过六十多部剧本，其中有两部与华盛顿·欧文合作。他的剧本《布鲁图斯》于1818年在伦敦首演后一直到19世纪末在大西洋两岸都很流行。他的剧本《米兰姑娘克拉里》中有一首著名的歌曲叫《家，甜蜜的家》。虽然剧本很受欢迎，可佩恩却很少收到版权税，常常身无分文，有时还被关进债务人监狱。最后，佩恩的名字被公众遗忘，但《家，甜蜜的家》却没有被人遗忘，而且被绣在千百万的布片上作为装饰。诗中最著名的一句“天下没有比家更好的地方”，曾在《绿野仙踪》这部影片中作为多萝西的护身符多次出现。
